Chapter Fifteen

The cab ride back to Noah’s apartment took only fifteen minutes, but even with Noah holding his hand, Oren’s mind was a thousand miles away, back to last weekend and their kisses and Noah’s confession. Both had played and replayed in his mind during the week, and Oren remained at a loss as to how to handle either one.

From where they left off last time, in Oren’s mind the next logical step would be Noah wanting to have sex with him. Possibly tonight. That thought sent a ripple of apprehension through his body. Despite waking up hard from his sexy dreams, or jerking off in the shower, pretending his wet hand was Noah’s mouth, Oren wasn’t sure.

And yet…he felt empty and aching when he was away from Noah.

“What’re you thinking about?” Noah’s thumb rubbed against his hand. “You look freaked out.”

“I’m not sure what you expect tonight, but”—he slanted a quick look at the rearview mirror of the cab to see if the driver was listening, but the man was busy muttering a string of unintelligible obscenities under his breath—“I know you’ll want to take it further than last time, and I don’t know if I’m ready.”

Noah’s grip tightened on his hand, but he remained silent. The cab pulled up in front of his apartment building, and once Noah paid, they exited into the chilly night air and stood on the sidewalk, facing each other.

“I hadn’t planned anything beyond having a late night dinner with a man I’m interested in and was happy to see was still interested in me. It’s funny because you were right—I was avoiding you. I thought after last week, you’d want to bail on me. That you’d figured me out for a phony, a fraud; a doctor who couldn’t handle his own problems but was busy giving advice to others.”

Oren locked eyes with Noah. “We’re both kind of screwed up, huh?”

For the first time since they got into the cab, Noah cracked a smile. “Looks like it. But can we go upstairs and get out of the freezing cold?” He held out his hand. “I’m not going to force you to do anything except maybe eat my bad cooking and change your taste in wine ’cause that stuff you had last week should be banned.”

Oren’s laughter echoed in the frosty air, and he hesitated only a moment before taking Noah’s offered hand. “I’m down with getting out of the cold, and you can try to change my tastes, but I’m afraid you’re stuck with me as I am.”

Noah’s gaze flared in the gleam of the streetlight. “I’m good with that, then.”

The pressure of Noah’s fingers laced with his relaxed Oren’s inhibitions. After all the texting and talking with Noah these past few weeks, above everything else, Oren trusted Noah to allow him to control whatever happened tonight.

Noah let them into his apartment, and after greeting the cat, Oren took off his coat, tossed it on a chair, and flopped down on the sofa.

“What do you want to eat? I can make pasta or a great grilled cheese.
